Red Phone: Unclaimed money to schools

Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

Hey Red Phone, not sure if this is up your alley, but I was
wondering what happens to the lottery money that people win but
never claim?
“Hey Red Phone, not sure if this is up your alley, but I was wondering what happens to the lottery money that people win but never claim? It sure would be nice if that money could go to various charities throughout the state.”

Red Phone: Dear How Much, Red Phone contacted Alex Traverso, spokesman for the California Lottery, who said all unclaimed prizes, whether it’s a couple of dollars or a couple of million dollars, go back to the schools.

“As of June 30, 2010 (the end of the most recent fiscal year) the California Lottery had given about $23 billion to schools since it started in 1985,” Traverso said. “Of that amount, $703,291,077 exactly was from unclaimed prizes.”
