GHS jumps all over Alvarez in 61-37 win.
Fresh off of its championship at the Seaside Sweet 16 last week, the GHS girls varsity basketball team shot 53 percent from the floor en route to a convincing 61-37 victory over Everett Alvarez in the teams’ Tri-County Athletic League opener Tuesday night in Salinas.
A 23-3 first quarter set the Mustangs (10-1, 1-0 TCAL) out on the right foot – to say the least – and a balanced second, third and fourth quarters carried the Mustangs to the win. GHS led 40-17 at the break and 51-30 after the third period.
Ashlee Williams posted a game-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Chelsea Hill and Michelle Sosa each sprang for 13 points. Six other Mustangs registered at least two points.
The victory is the Mustangs’ seventh straight as they now shift their focus to Thursday night and rival San Benito.
The Balers (8-5 overall, 0-1 TCAL) lost to defending league champ North Salinas 48-25 on Tuesday.
The two rivals split the season series last season, with each winning on their respective home courts.
Game time for Thursday’s showdown is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
