The Gilroy Assistance League is now accepting grant requests for 2011.

Last year the nonprofit, which goes by GALs, gave out more than $15,000 to various local youth services.

GALs’ sole mission is to provide grants for children and youth organizations, according to its website.

Patty Giacalone, GALs grant chairwoman, said one of last year’s grants went to DreamPower Horsemanship to provide a therapeutic horse riding camp for youth with special needs.

Another grant went to the Gilroy Youth Commission, a youth group which works with seniors and has plans to host a dance for them this spring.

These grants can also be used for other purposes such as Gilroy’s FFA using last year’s grant to repair roofs, gutters and fencing on farm buildings.

Giacalone said the grants help children learn from different activities, which aren’t always available at schools.

“I feel there are so many things important to our kids that are being cut out from schools.”

The 35 active members in GALs read grant proposals and vote individually on which organizations to donate to.

Giacalone said the organization has not yet determined the dollar amount which will be available for grants this year.

GALs funds are raised from private donations, member dues and fundraising activities such as an annual Mother’s Day “Impressions of Gilroy” Home and Garden Tour, sales of “Reflections Vol. II” cookbooks filled with local recipes and sales of a throw blanket that depicts historic Gilroy.

A formal grant proposal must be completed and returned no later than Friday, Jan. 28. Funds will be distributed in late March 2011.

Forms may be downloaded at GAL’s website at gilroyassistanceleague.org or picked up from Starritt Realtors at 7477 Eigleberry St. Completed forms may be returned to the same location or mailed to Patty Giacalone, P.O. Box 2062, Gilroy, CA. 95021-2062.
