Animal Shelter Supervisor Brigid Wasson said her friend, a retired shelter employee, recently called her with a hairy dilemma.

“I hope you can help us with a potential disaster we have coming down the pike,” Wasson told the Dispatch. She explained her friend has fallen on hard times due to her inability to make a substantial living in real estate, and the situation is worsened by her husband’s failing health.

“She has 40 cats that she is no longer able to care for,” Wasson said.

She said the good news is that all the cats are neutered, healthy and in good condition, with about half being friendly.

“The other half are unsocial, and would make good barn cats and mousers,” she said on their behalf.

The bad news is that the San Martin Animal Shelter has more than 50 cats, and can only take on more as spaces become available.

Wasson’s hoping local residents will rally to help a woman in need find some homes for the superfluous felines.
