Nothing like a little late-game drama.
With the score tied 1-1, and less than five minutes remaining in the game, Christopher High’s electrifying leading scorer Cristian Manzo created an opportunity in the box, drew a foul and earned the Cougars a penalty kick.
Angel Trejo’s number was called and the junior captain delivered the game winner in the 77th minute to lift the Cougars past visiting Monte Vista Christian 2-1 on Friday.
The Mustangs scored five minutes before intermission to take a 1-0 lead into the second half.
And has as been the case over the past handful of games, the Cougars’ fireworks show was held off until late in the game.
CHS evened matters in the 65th minute. Sophomore Giovanni Troini lofted a shot into the box, which found its way into the net after bouncing off of a MVC defender. The 1-1 tie held until Trejo’s conversion.
Two days earlier, two second-half goals helped the Cougars leave Monterey with a 2-2 draw in the team’s Monterey Bay League opener.
CHS (3-5-2 overall, 1-0-1) faces North Monterey County on Wednesday in Gilroy at 3:30 p.m.
