An impaired driver faces felony charges after her 17-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries after her car crashed into a tree, according to Morgan Hill police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

Police responded to a report of an accident at Watsonville Road and La Arboleda Way about 2:40 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they saw a 2003 Ford Mustang crashed into a tree on the north side of Watsonville Road, just west of La Arboleda, Neumayer said.

The driver, Angela Barbieri, 22 of Morgan Hill, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, Neumayer said.

Her passenger, a 17-year-old male, was unconscious at the accident scene and had visible facial injuries, police said. He was flown by helicopter to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. As of Monday morning, he was still being treated in the intensive care unit and was in critical condition.

Police think the passenger was also under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Barbieri complained of pain to her ankles and wrists, and was later transported to Saint Louise Regional Hospital, Neumayer said.

After she was released from the hospital, Barbieri was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, and she was booked into Santa Clara County jail.

The collision is under investigation, police said. Anyone with information about the accident may contact Morgan Hill police at (408) 779-2101.
