Letter: Only 28% of spending for police and fire?

Dear Editor,

What are the sacred cow earmarks the editor referenced in answer to the the police representative’s letter to the Dispatch? Only 28 percent of Gilroy’s tax revenues are spent for police and fire services. That means more than 70 percent of Gilroy’s incoming revenues are not available for the City Council to use for the resident’s public safety. What is the money being spent on?

“Legally obligated earmarks” does not explain what our taxes are buying. Could it be that our local government borrowed on our future and now wants to cut back on public safety to fill in the hole they dug?

Transparency seems to have a basic rule – follow the money.

Sandra Petersen, Gilroy
