The City of Gilroy Recreation Department, in conjunction with Gilroy Rotary Club Endowment, Inc. and the Dennis Daniels Company are putting on the 22nd annual Kids Discover Arts event this Saturday.

The free event features local art professionals and will conduct more than 20 different workshops and hands-on activities for children ages 5 to 11. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Community Center at 250 W. Sixth St.

“The artists and teaching community have embraced this event,” said Cathy Mirelez, recreation supervisor with the City of Gilroy. “We get returning artists every year to teach this. It’s all volunteer.”

She said about 75 high school students also turn out to assist with projects such as fine arts, charcoal drawing, water color, Chinese calligraphy, beaded books, papermaking, printmaking, hands-on clay, stamp designing and more.

According to Mirelez, turnout ranges anywhere from 350 to 400 kids.

“We began or created this event when the arts were taken from school classrooms 22 years ago,” Mirelez explained. “We had lots of teachers that were behind us, and it’s just evolved from that.”

Organizers ask that children be accompanied by an adult, and wear “paint friendly” clothing.

There will be food concessions for sale, and additional parking on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Church Street.
