Ryan Alba and Matt Brotholic contributed three hits each, Ronnie Reed had two triples and the Gilroy High baseball team opened Tri-County Athletic League play with a convincing 11-3 triumph on the road against Salinas High on Tuesday.

“We started TCAL off on the right note,” manager Johnny Ramirez said. “The guys are playing with something to prove.”

The Mustangs didn’t wait long to get the bats going Tuesday, scoring three times in the top of the first.

Alba led off the game with a single, stole second (one of nine GHS base swipes in the game) and scored on Reed’s first triple of the game. Eric Vegas plated Reed with a double and later crossed home on a wild pitch to stake the Mustangs to a 3-0 lead.

The Cowboys countered with one run in their half.

Bubu Garcia smoked a two-RBI double off the wall, Reed Kienle, Jordan Dexter and Brotholic added RBI hits to lift GHS to an 8-1 cushion in the third. Salinas again answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, though the Mustangs’ lead was never threatened, Ramirez said.

“I felt like we never lost control,” he said.

Starting pitcher Aaron Cimino helped his cause in the sixth with an RBI base hit. Alba and Reed also had RBI in the inning.

On the mound, Cimino struck out five and gave up eight hits in his complete game effort.

GHS has a busy week ahead hosting Salinas on Thursday, Alisal on Friday and non-league opponent Rocklin on Saturday.
