In a split-second, sophomore Mariza Rodriguez’s double play in the bottom of the seventh staved off of dangerous no-out threat by host Milpitas and helped preserve a Christopher High softball team 4-3 victory Tuesday afternoon.

Atoning for an error earlier in the inning, Rodriguez snagged a line drive down the third base line and in one motion tagged the runner, recording the crucial double play.

Angelica Carrillo, who spelled starting pitcher Aly Olvera after the first two batters of the inning reached base, induced a game-ending ground out to shut the case.

The slim one-run lead was provided in the top half of the seventh on a RBI-single from Kayla Medrano, plating Arianna Vasquez who led off the inning with a triple.

The eventual game winner came an inning after Milpitas clawed back from a 3-1 deficit to tie matters.

“Even though some things didn’t go our way, we were still able to get out of there with the win,” manager Larry Nabzeska said.

Vasquez scored on an error in the first inning to give the Cougars an early lead, however Milpitas answered in the bottom half to knot the contest at 1-all.

An RBI-single from Carrillo to bring around Mariah Martinez, who connected with one of her two hits, and another run-scoring hit from Olivia Barajas in the second, lifted CHS to a 3-1 advantage where the score stood until the sixth.
