SOFTBALL: Mustangs ease past Trojans, 10-0

The 10-run-rule shortened contest concluded 1 hour and 20
minutes after it began due in large part to freshman Holly Lam’s
efficiency in the circle – complete game, eight strikeouts, one hit
and three walks – and a five-run first inning.
The Gilroy High softball team quickly took care of business against visiting Alisal, defeating the Trojans 10-0 in six innings Tuesday.

The 10-run-rule shortened contest concluded 1 hour and 20 minutes after it began due in large part to freshman Holly Lam’s efficiency in the circle – complete game, eight strikeouts, one hit and three walks – and a five-run first inning.

Six of the Mustangs’ first seven batters in the opening frame reached base en route to the five-run inning.

Melanie Morelos doubled home Casey Lester and Stephanie Rodriguez, and Dani Hemeon’s sacrifice fly to left field brought in Morelos for a quick 3-0 lead four batters into the inning.

Back-to-back singles from Lam and Lindsay Holt set up a Mendoza RBI single and run-scoring sacrifice fly from Elaina Vasquez to cap the inning.

Lam’s RBI double made it 6-0 after two, and Kaylana Mah pushed it to 7-0 in the fifth with a RBI single.

A Lam single, Holt reaching on a hit by pitch, and four straight walks to Nicole Green, Stephanie Gomez, Vasquez and Mah, allowed the Mustangs (15-3 overall, 4-1 TCAL) to score the final three runs in the sixth without recoding an out.

Gilroy concludes the week with a crosstown, non-league matchup with Christopher on Thursday. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. at CHS.
