Former student: Daley an inspiration at GHS who makes a daily difference

Dear Editor,
I was shocked, but mostly incredibly sad, to read the Dispatch’s
article regarding Jack Daley leaving his position at Gilroy High
School.
As a former GHS student, I had the pleasure of working with Mr.
Daley while he was the activities director from 1995-1999. Having
been out of the area for many years and working for several
community newspapers that cover local high schools throughout our
country, I can honestly say I have yet to come across a teacher as
inspirational as Mr. Daley.
Dear Editor,

I was shocked, but mostly incredibly sad, to read the Dispatch’s article regarding Jack Daley leaving his position at Gilroy High School.

As a former GHS student, I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Daley while he was the activities director from 1995-1999. Having been out of the area for many years and working for several community newspapers that cover local high schools throughout our country, I can honestly say I have yet to come across a teacher as inspirational as Mr. Daley.

Graduating from Gilroy High School in 1999, I didn’t leave with a huge list of teachers who truly made a difference in my life. I think I saw my assigned guidance counselor once a year who checked some boxes and told me when college applications were due.

I received an average academic education, but looking back on my high school experience I remember the early morning ASB meetings, organizing pep rallies and dances. I remember knowing that no matter what was on my plate that day I could always wander into Mr. Daley’s office and bounce ideas off him and be greeted with a welcoming smile.

The idea of him leaving his position at GHS turned my stomach. He is a role model to so many young impressionable people who walk through that campus every year. He is one of the few teachers I came across who truly cared and wanted to make a difference in our lives. To lose him would mean losing the spirit of GHS. In my mind, he is Gilroy High School.

I strongly urge the school district to keep Mr. Daley on staff. He is an amazing teacher who gives his time, energy and heart to the youth of this community. I, along with many others, are better people because of him. His absence will be an incredible blow to the morale and spirit of GHS.
