Former Gilroy High School softball pitcher Sarah Lorraine Lira was named to the 2011 All-State Second Team.
The list, released by ESPN Rise and Cal-Hi Sports, highlights the state’s best players, breaking the field down into five categories: Catchers, pitchers, infielders, outfielders and multi-purpose. Lira was slated into multi-purpose – a fitting spot.
A four-year starter for the Mustangs, Lira graduated last month and is headed to St. Mary’s College in the fall, where she is expected to see time in the infield.
During the 2010-11 regular season, Lira batted .324 with three triples, seven home runs and 24 RBI. In the circle, Llra, the Mustangs go-to hurler, posted a 1.20 earned run average, surrendering 18 earned runs in 104 innings pitched. Opponents hit a meager .155 off of the right-hander.
