Gilroy tops San Jose 11-1
A different level, but the same results. Playing the minimum four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule, the Gilroy Little League softball Majors All-Stars, many of whom played as the Minors squad last summer, proved they could win at any level with an 11-1 triumph over the San Jose Spartans in the District 59 All-Star championship game Thursday in San Jose.

The same core group of girls, guided by manager George Sandoval, who returns this season, also won the district crown in 2010 and went on to be victorious in the state tournament as well.

This year’s Division II state tournament begins Saturday.

Maria Sandoval efficiently mowed down would-be hitters, striking out the side in each of the first two innings and piling up 10 by game’s end. The Spartans’ lone hit, a double, came in the top of the fourth.

Gilroy jumped out in from with three runs in the bottom of the first frame, receiving RBI base hits from Pati Soria, CJ Del Real and Sandoval.

Morgan England walked and scored on Nikki Villanueva’s RBI single. Villanueva later scored on a fielder’s choice ground out by Jel Reyes as Gilroy inflated its lead to 5-0 after two innings.

Neither team mustered any offense in the third, however, Gilroy more than made up for it in the bottom of the fourth, plating six runs to punctuate the title.

Alexis Conlon, Maddy Cox, Del Real, Villanueva, Reyes and Soria all crossed home plate in the fourth. Reyes and Soria reached on singles, Cox rapped a double and Del Real a triple.
