Volunteers will be hosting a Project Homeless Connect from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.

The event will take place in the parking lot of the proposed site for the Gilroy Compassion Center at 8425 Monterey Rd. in Gilroy, a year-round homeless shelter that is a grassroots vision on its way to becoming a reality.

Project Homeless Connect is based out of San Francisco with a local chapter in San Jose assisting cities such as Gilroy to organize convention-like gatherings of representatives from various service agencies. Volunteers then provide a hot meal, mobile medical services, clothing and personal care items to anyone who is homeless.

Volunteers from Housing 1000, a local campaign under the national 100,000 Homes Campaign, will also be present and conducting interviews to add information to a database called the Housing 1000 Registry. This system will be used to identify the most vulnerable among the homeless population, such as those who have been homeless the longest and those with the most severe medical complications. This will enable such individuals to be prioritized for permanent housing. The overarching purpose of Housing 1000 is to create permanent housing solutions for those most in need, according to the organization’s website.

Participating groups donating time and materials include the Church of Latter Day Saints, St. Joseph’s Family Center, the Gilroy Street Team, Gardner Family Health, Gavilan College, South County Mental Health and the Gilroy Homeless Outreach Task Force.

The community is invited to participate, learn more about homelessness in Gilroy and become informed about local efforts to provide year-round services to the homeless.
