Andrea Rose Nicholson and Kevin Lewis McCandless were married June 18.

Andrea, daughter of Brian and Marguerite Nicholson, is a 2003 graduate of Aptos High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University in 2007. She is an instructor and the director of student activities at St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School in Watsonville. She is pursuing a master’s degree from San Jose State University.

Kevin, son of Mark and Loree McCandless, is a 2000 graduate of Gilroy High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in 2004 and a master’s degree in 2005 from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He is a professor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose and is pursuing a doctorate in education at the University of San Francisco.

The couple was married at St. Joseph’s Monastery, with a reception at Nicholson Vineyards Winery in Aptos. They honeymooned in Italy and Austria and reside in Campbell.


Ryann Alexis Lauckner-Farotte and Andrew Gordon Farotte were married June 4, 2011 in Santa Barbara.

Ryann, daughter of Scott Lauckner of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lisa Lauckner of Minnewaukan, N.D., received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California in 2006. She is a television writer and producer.

Andrew, son of Gordon Edward Farotte Jr. and Rosalind Louise Maida Farotte of Gilroy, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California in 2002. He is a television writer and producer.

The families of the bride and groom met and celebrated at a private weekend retreat held at the Summer’s Run residence in Santa Barbara. The bride and groom were married by the groom’s sister, Elizabeth Anne Farotte-Heenan of Austin, Texas.

The couple resides in Los Angeles.



Christa Rose Renz and Nicholas O’Brien are engaged to be married.

Christa, daughter of Thomas and Linda Renz of Hollister, is a 2006 graduate of San Benito High School and is currently working for Renz & Renz Commercial Real Estate in Gilroy.

Nicholas, son of Mr. and Mrs. John O’Brien, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is currently attending St. Mary’s College University in Calgary, where he will graduate in spring 2012. He aspires to be a teacher at a Catholic elementary school.

The couple will exchange vows followed by a solemn high mass at Mission San Juan Bautista on Aug. 6, 2011. They will make their home in Calgary.


Bryan Navas

Army Spec. Bryan O. Navas was awarded the Combat Action Badge for efforts during combat operations.

The badge provides recognition to soldiers who personally engage the enemy, or are engaged by the enemy during combat operations. Recipients must be performing assigned duties in an area where hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay is authorized; be personally present and actively engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and performing satisfactorily in accordance with the prescribed rules of engagement.

Navas, a grenadier with two years of military service, is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment at Fort Riley, Junction City, Kan.

He is the son of Arturo and Grechell Navas of San Martin, and a 2006 graduate of Live Oak High School.

Alexander Drzaic

Alexander P. Drzaic, of Morgan Hill, who studied in Fairfield University’s College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in biology. Fairfield University, a Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Conn., awarded 1,285 diplomas at its 61st commencement.

Stephen Hager

Army Reserve Col. Stephen J. Hager has graduated from the U.S. Army War College Correspondence Course at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pa.

The course prepares officers of all services, as well as civilian officials of the federal government, for top level command and staff positions with U.S. armed forces throughout the world. Students partake in the Army’s highest level of formal education with the mission of preparing selected leaders to assume strategic leadership responsibilities in military and national security organizations.

Hager is a brigade commander assigned to the 2nd Signal Brigade, 100th Division at Sacramento. The colonel has served in the military for 24 years.

He is the son of Vera Hager of Bend, Ore.

Hager graduated from Live Oak High School in 1983. He attended Santa Clara University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1987, and a master’s degree in 1989.
