High-speed rail community workshop Wednesday

A firm hired by the city of Gilroy to conduct a high-speed rail station visioning project will hold a community workshop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gilroy Senior Center, located at 7371 Hanna St. in Gilroy. This will be the fourth workshop hosted by Design, Community & Environment, which the city tabbed to conduct a $200,000 study to hash out the pros and cons of building a high-speed rail station either downtown or east of U.S Highway 101.

Movie night tonight at Las Animas Park

The City of Gilroy Recreation Department is hosting a free family movie night beginning at 9 p.m. tonight at Las Animas Veterans Park, located at 400 Mantelli Driver In Gilroy. The movie will be “How to Train Your Dragon,” a PG-rated film about a young child who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a dragon. Concessions will be available, and residents are asked to bring chairs and blankets. For more information, call 846-0460.

Clean-up day at Las Animas Park Aug. 20

The city of Gilroy and other regional agencies will host a clean-up day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 20 at Las Animas Veterans Park, located at 400 Mantelli Drive in Gilroy.

Residents of all ages are asked to participate, and volunteers can earn community service hours. The first 10 participants who sign up will receive gift cards. Volunteers are asked to meet at the parking lot at Mantelli Drive and Floral Street before 10 a.m. Cleaning supplies will be provided. The event is sponsored by the members of Healthy Gilroy Campaign, which includes South Count Collaborative, Communities United in Prevention, Community Media Access Partnership, California Youth Advocacy Network, the city of Gilroy and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.

City announces openings for child recreation classes

The City of Gilroy Recreation Department is accpeting enrollment for Fall Early Childhood Recreation Classes, which began the week of Sept. 6. There are limited spaces in four classes: Tiny Tots (ages 3 to 4, 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays); Happy Tots (ages 3 to 5, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays); pre-Kinder Explorers (ages 4 to 5, 9 a.m. to noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays); and Countdown to Kindergarten PM (ages 4 to 5, noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday).
