Mustangs’ winning formula starts at practice
In 2010, the Gilroy High football team struggled to solve the winning formula – a 2-8 record the unsatisfactory result.

From the get-go, as the Mustangs opened the fall practice schedule Friday night, first-year head coach Steven Lo implemented Part A in a laundry list of ingredients to what he wants to see blossom into a turnaround season in 2011.

“The thing we are trying to build right now is a sense of urgency,” Lo said.

“I talked to the kids about how many practices we have before we suit up for our first game. We have 16 practices in total. You only have one shot at each practice, so you have to get out and get it done right the first time.”

After Friday evening’s practice, which began at 7:30 p.m., the Mustangs took the field twice Saturday, splitting the double-day into separate defensive and offensive sessions.

“Practicing at game-speed and having that urgency is part of my philosophy,” Lo said. “And the coaching staff is on that same boat. We are trying to build that into our practices.”
