A Morgan Hill man who had been staying at the San Juan Inn remains in critical condition after he was struck by a car in a hit-and-run early Thursday morning, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

About 2:15 a.m. Thursday, sheriff’s deputies responded to The Alameda at Pearce Street in San Juan Bautista for a report of a car accident and a male lying in the road. The victim is Richard G. Ambris, 69, whose residence is listed as Morgan Hill. He had been staying at the San Juan Inn for an unclear amount of time, said Sgt. Tony Lamonica of the sheriff’s office.

Ambris was flown to a Bay Area hospital due to the injuries and is in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Ambris was walking to the San Juan Inn when a car struck him in the middle of the road on The Alameda. A witness reported hearing the accident and then seeing an older, beige, compact car leave the scene southbound on The Alameda. The suspect vehicle then ran the red light and turned east onto Highway 156, according to the sheriff’s office.

The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in finding the driver and vehicle that struck Ambris and left the scene.  If anyone has any information, call the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office at (831) 636-4080 or its TIP-LINE at 636-4084.
