Senior citizens beware, phone scam circulating

A concerned senior citizen in Gilroy wants to warn others of a phone scam circulating under the guise of the Publisher’s Clearinghouse.

This morning, the woman was called at her home in Gilroy by someone who claimed they were with the Publisher’s Clearinghouse and that she had won $2 million.

“It was especially alarming when I haven’t entered the contest,” she said.

She was asked by a “Nigel Patrick” who introduced himself as the company’s representative to go to Western Union and wire $375 to a “Robert Pettiford” to a bank in St. Louis, Illinois within in the hour.

Patrick said he would get back to the woman once the money was received, “and he asked if they wanted photographers at my home even for when they give me the check for $2 million,” she said.

The phone number from which the fraudulent calls were made is 1-876-455-0640 – and according to an Internet search is located in Jamaica. The senior citizen has reported the call to the Gilroy Police Department.
