Ten local football players will suit up for one final high school game at the 28th annual Salinas Jaycees All-Star Football game Friday night at Monterey Peninsula College.
Christopher High players Dillon Babb, Bryant Cid, Marcus Harrell, Patrick Mank, Brandon Pickens, Mikey Pirnik and Nic Slater, along with Gilroy High’s Jourdan Soares, Alfredo Mireles and Jose Betancourt were chosen from a vast pool of talented seniors who participate in the Monterey Bay League, Tri-County Athletic League, Satnta Cruz Coast Athletic League and Mission Trail Athletic League.
“We are really just promoting sportsmanship and integrity throughout the game,” Salinas Jaycees co-chairman Don Chapin III said Wednesday. “It’s a remarkable tradition these kids are carrying on. It’s been great to see the lighter side of their personalities over the past week. It’s a great group.”
The players were informed of their selections two weeks ago and have been practicing since Jan. 10 for the contest. The local contingent, who will be joined by others from Monterey High, North Monterey County, Palma, King City, Pacific Grove and Marina, are coached by North Monterey County’s Ron Stefani. Alvarez’s Ralph Ward will guide the otehr team, which consists of players from North Salinas, Alvarez, Soledad, Salinas, Alisal, Greenfield, Carmel, Stevenson, Seaside and Gonzales.
All proceeds will benefit the participating schools’ athletic departments. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
