WRESTLING: Locals still alive at CCS Girls Championships

Three Gilroy High girls wrestlers entered Day 1 of the third annual Central Coast Section Girls Championships and two are still alive in the competition, which began Friday at Oak Gorve High School in San Jose.

Megan Nebesnick (189 pounds), who finished runner-up in 2011, didn’t have to hit the mat Friday, receiving two byes through to Day 2.

Jennifer Garcia outlasted Katie Blackburn of Milpitas 8-7 in the first round of the 126-pound division. She rebounded after losing her quarterfinal match with a pin of Karen Ferreira out of Mission-San Francisco. She will start Saturday against Gavrielle Thompson of Sacred Heart Cathedral in a Round 3 consolation match.

Courtney Pipkin’s tournament started off with a first-period fall victory over Sydnie Belardes of Del Mar. However, the 98-pounder was defeated in her next two matches and will not continue Saturday.

Christopher High’s Joanna Heredia (189) and Jasmine Flores (235) received byes on Day 1.

The tournament resumes at 10 a.m. Finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
