Witness helps police track down locker room burglar
A patron at a local gym helped track down a burglar who swiped a wallet and an iPhone from a locker room, police said.
Late Monday morning, police say Michael Eredia, 37, entered Gilroy Health and Fitness on Church Street through a side entrance and stole items from the men’s room locker. Eredia left the building, but a witness watched as he walked north on Church Street, phoning information to police regarding what Eredia looked like and where he was going. Police located Eredia at Church and Howson streets, where he was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of burglary tools, GPD said.
The wallet, with $50 cash, was returned, according to police. The stolen iPhone also was returned, but several other items – including gold necklace worth $1,800 – are still missing, police said.
Suspect nabbed after fleeing through neighborhood
Police on Feb. 2 arrested a 22-year-old Gilroy man wanted on multiple warrants – but not before the suspect fled through multiple residents’ yards in an attempt to escape.
Officers from the Gilroy Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team were patrolling the 200 block of Swanston Lane around 6 p.m. when they observed a suspect – later identified as Jonathan Arroyo – who “immediately ran” from officers, GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said.
Officers, however, did not initially give chase because no crime had been committed, Gallacinao said. Soon after, a woman walked out of her home and told officers Arroyo ran through her home and into neighbors’ backyards. Arroyo is not associated with any of those homes, according to police.
Officers jumped multiple fences and pursued Arroyo, eventually subduing and arresting him. Police soon learned Arroyo had a felony warrant for theft or unauthorized use of a vehicle. Officers also found a small amount of marijuana in one of Arroyo’s pockets. He was booked for resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. Arroyo was also wanted on two misdemeanor warrants for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license, according to GPD.

A GPD report states Horacio Cernas, 22, kept driving after he collided with a parked vehicle near Eighth and Eigleberry Streets at 1:49 a.m. Cernas then drove down the 7500 block of Forest Street, where he crashed into five more parked cars, according to the report.
He was arrested and booked on suspicion of hit and run and driving under the influence, police said.
Thieves smash into Outlet store using sledgehammer
An unknown number of suspects stole thousands of dollars in merchandise from the Juicy Couture store at the Gilroy Premium Outlets early Monday morning, using a sledgehammer to make their way in, police said.
In all, the ransacking caused more than $7,600 in damages and lost goods, police said.
The incident is under investigation.
