BASEBALL: Gavilan tops defending champs in conference opener

The Gavilan College baseball team kicked off Coast Conference play with a 6-5 victory over defending champion Ohlone College in 10 innings in Fremont on Tuesday.
“It was another total team effort for us,” Gavilan manager Neal Andrade said. “It was a great way to start conference.”
The Rams (8-5 overall, 1-0 conference) led 3-1 after three innings and 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth before Ohlone, ranked No. 5 in Northern California, tied the game 5-5.
“That could have been deflating right there, but it wasn’t,” Andrade said. “We came back in the 10th and were able to get it back.”
Brian Bradley poked a lead off single and Tyler Oertle pushed him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Bradley later scored when Paul Eischens’ ground ball up the middle was misplayed by the second baseman.
Gavilan starter Shea Adams went nine innings for the win, striking out seven and walking five before giving way to Bradley to close it in the 10th.
Kenny Hall had three hits and two RBIs, Tim Andrade and Lyell Marks had two hits and, Oertle Steve Cabral and Julio Cortez had an RBI each.
The Rams return to the diamond today at home at 2 p.m. against Skyline.
