A high-speed pursuit that started in San Martin late Sunday evening ended in Morgan Hill with one suspect arrested.
It started when a Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department deputy saw a traffic violation involving a 1994 blue Toyota. After the driver refused to stop, he got onto northbound U.S. 101. By then, the deputy called reinforcements, said Sgt. Jose Cardosa of the Sheriffs Department.
The driver, 43 year old San Martin resident Manual Campo exited off of Tennant Avenue in Morgan Hill, at which point Morgan Hill Police Department were notified. Campo continued to violate traffic rules as he traveled at high speeds, running red lights and stop signs. At 50 mph on Cochrane Road, he lost control of the car, coming to a stop. Deputies with guns drawn surrounded Campo and ordered him to come out of the vehicle. Instead, Campo reversed his car, almost hitting a deputy’s patrol car. A sheriffs helicopter also aided in the pursuit, said Cardosa.
From there, he continued running red lights and made his way eventually to Del Monte Avenue where he stopped because smoke was coming out of his engine. Once again, deputies ordered he exit the vehicle. Still refusing, said Cardosa, they had to break in his windows in order to physically remove Campo fom the car.
He was arrested and taken to county jail on suspicion of evading a police officer, resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of methamphetamine, driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.
