BASEBALL: Monterey beats Christopher; Cougars face must-win Friday

Rounding the final corner of the Monterey Bay League season this week, Friday’s road tilt against Monte Vista Christian already had a must-win tag associated with it. But after Wednesday’s loss to Monterey High, the stakes are raised that much more for the Christopher High baseball team.
The Toreadors used a three-run fourth inning to grab a 4-2 advantage and held on for a 4-3 victory, handing the Cougars their third MBL loss. Those three setbacks are by a combined 4 runs.
Monterey, too, has three MBL defeats. However, the Toreadors (15-3 MBL) beat CHS (14-3 MBL) two out of three this season, which allows them to leapfrog the Cougars into second place.
All of that brings it back to Friday’s game at MVC (15-2 MBL), where a CHS triumph would give the Gilroyans a piece of the league title, sharing it with Monterey and Monte Vista Christian. A loss puts the Cougars in third place and without an automatic Central Coast Section playoff berth.
It’s sounds complicated. But in the end, it all comes down to Friday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at MVC.
