WRESTLING: Gilroy alumnus Kastl named to All-Rookie Team

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman 165-pound wrestler Dominic Kastl has been named to the 2012 Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie Team. The Gilroy High School graduate (Class of 2010) also was ranked as the No. 3 freshman in the nation in his weight class.
Kastl was Cal Poly’s lone Pac-12 champion during the 2011-12 season and qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championship in St. Louis,. He was named freshman/newcomer of the year for the 2011-12 Pac-12 wrestling season.
Kastl compiled a 14-5 record and won nine straight matches in January and February before going 2-2 at the nationals, including a 2-1 upset against 10th-seeded Cody Yohn of Minnesota.
Kastl recorded two falls and a pair of major decisions during the season. A second-place finisher in the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming in November, Kastl won his three matches at the Pac-12 finals in Boise by a 13-3 major decision and 6-5 and 8-1 decisions.
Kastl placed fourth as a senior and seventh as a junior in the CIF State High School Championships and was a four-time Central Coast Section champion – three of those titles coming as a member of the St. Francis wrestling squad. Kastl transferred to GHS his senior year where he won the fourth CCS crown to become one of four Mustangs to have four CCS championships. Armando Gonzalez Jr., Hunter Collins and Jesse Delgado are the other three.
