South County spreads the love

The 3,000 pounds of food collected by Recology from Gilroy and Morgan Hill customers.

Thanks to donations from Gilroy and Morgan Hill residents, Recology South Valley collected more than 3,000 pounds of canned and nonperishable foods for Harvest Food Bank in San Jose.

Residents placed bags of food next to their trash can over the past week, and Recology drivers swung by to pick up both the trash and the food and brought it all to their garage on Pacheco Pass Highway, where it now waits to be picked up by Harvest.

Harvest plans to distribute the food all over the county. Recology has collected about 3,000 pounds of food each year since 1995, said General Manger Phil Couchee.

“We’re glad we’re able to do it and appreciative of the community for providing,” Couchee said. “All of it comes from our customers and we’re so appreciative of that.”
