The Hollister-Gilroy area California Highway Patrol office will offer two safe driving programs in January – one for teenage drivers and one for senior citizen drivers.
Age well drive smart program
They will offer an older driver traffic safety seminar in Morgan Hill on Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Centennial Recreation Senior Center, 171 W. Edmundson Ave., in Morgan Hill.
Residents from Santa Clara and San Benito County can register by calling 408-782-1284. The seminar will cover the following topics:
- Myths about older drivers
- Compensating for age-related change
- “Tune Up” your driving skills
- Rules of the Road
- A Confidential self evaluation
- Safe driving tips
- Nutrition and strength
- Transportation alternatives
Space is limited for the “Age Well Drive Smart” program so reservations are recommended. Refreshments will be served.
Start Smart program
In addition to the senior citizen class, the local office will also provide a “Start Smart Class” for teenage drivers on Jan. 15, at 6 p.m., at the office at 740 Renz Lane, in Gilroy. The program is available for new and future licensed teenage drivers between the ages of 15-19 with their parents or guardians.
The class will cover the following topics:
- Collision avoidance techniques
- Collision causing elements
- Driver/parent responsibilities
- Seat belt restraints
Testimonials are provided by officers who have investigated fatal collisions involving teens, in addition to testimonials fro parents whose children have died in collisions.
