Let’s go to the show!

South Valley Civic Theatre has announced its upcoming 2014-15 season, which will include something for everyone—from kids to adults, and fans of musicals.
“Proof”—scheduled to run Sept. 12-Oct. 11—was the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play.
On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks her father left behind. A burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit?
“Little Women”—slated for Nov. 21-Dec. 13—is a timeless classic about the March sisters’ journey from childhood to maturity during the American Civil War. Meg, the eldest; Jo, the high spirited tomboy; Amy, the self centered beauty; and gentle Beth learn to endure good times and bad as they share the joys and pains of growing up. This adaptation compresses the novel while still including milestones. Interlaced with warmth, family loyalty and traditional values, all the important events of the March family provide us with a better understanding of our own lives.
Based on the Dreamworks film by the same name, “Shrek”—scheduled for Feb. 20-March 14, 2015—is a hilarious musical about everyone’s favorite ogre. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an ogre, not a handsome prince, shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and more than a dozen other fairytale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.
Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in “Seussical Jr.”—slated for April 24-May 9, 2015—a fantastical musical extravaganza. The Cat in the Hat, the narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton’s challenge is two-fold: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.
“The Producers”—scheduled for July 10-Aug. 8, 2015—is the story of down-on-his-luck producer Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. Together, they hatch the ultimate scam: Raise more money than you need for a sure fire Broadway fiasco … and pocket the difference. With tunes and a book by superstar comedian Mel Brooks and co-bookwriter Thomas Meehan (“Hairspray”), this big-time Broadway musical is one of the funniest shows around.
