Free adoption days to benefit San Martin Animal Shelter

Olivia is a 10-month-old tortie/tabby mix who has been spayed. She is very sweet, gentle and good with other cats and children. She is an indoor only cat because she only has one eye. She is available for adoption at the San Martin Animal Shelter.

Free adoption days are here again.
The County of Santa Clara Animal Care and Control’s San Martin Animal Shelter, located at 12370 Murphy Avenue in San Martin, is participating in Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days—the nation’s largest free adoption event May 31-June 1.
All dog and cat adoptions are free to qualified adopters and for each adoption, the Santa Clara County will receive a stipend of $500-$2,000 from Maddie’s Fund.
The San Martin Animal Shelter will open for extended hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all weekend. Adopters can choose from dozens of kittens, puppies and adult cats and dogs.
“We are proud to be part of Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days that will provide loving homes for pets currently in our San Martin Animal Shelter,” County Board of Supervisors President Mike Wasserman said. “Not only will residents be adding a new member to their families, but the county will receive an adoption stipend from Maddie’s Fund that will help the shelter care for more homeless cats and dogs while they are waiting for a home.”
The Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days event includes more than 200 shelters and rescue groups in nine states. This year, Maddie’s Fund wants to find homes for 10,000 animals nationwide during the two-day event. Locally, the County shelter hopes to place more than 70 in new homes.
“During Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days the community can help us meet our adoption goal of placing more than 70 pets with new families,” said Albert Escobar, Animal Care and Control Manager who oversees the San Martin Animal Shelter. “With support from foundations such as Maddie’s Fund, we can continue meeting our goal of finding homes for 100 percent of all healthy shelter animal dogs and cats, and no euthanizing of healthy animals.”
Standard adoption fees of $90-$120 for dogs and cats will be waived during the adoption weekend. Also included in the free adoption are $500 worth of services, including spay/neuter surgery, Microchip ID implantation and registration, age-appropriate vaccinations, de-fleaing and de-worming, and FIV/FELV testing for cats.
In 2013, during the nationwide event, 103 pets were adopted from the County Animal Shelter. As a result, Maddie’s Fund gave the shelter a $58,500 grant for support of programs and services benefiting the homeless cats and dogs in the shelter’s care and their placement into homes.
