GILROY—The Christopher girls tennis pulled out a 4-3 win over Everett Alvarez Tuesday at home but the Eagles didn’t make it easy. Three of the day’s matches needed a tiebreaker to decide a winner and ended with the Cougars on top each time.
No. 3 singles player Niet Khay dropped her first set 6-2 to Alvarez’s Amanda Wilmole but rebounded with a 7-5 victory. The two battled in the tiebreaker set but it was Khay who pulled out the 10-8 win.
The Cougars’ No. 2 doubles team of Cher Choi and Camryn Crowley cruised to a 6-2 win in Set 1. Stephanie Contreras and Maria Romo got the better of the Cougars in Set 2, winning 7-5. Christopher held on to win the tiebreaker 10-5.
Christopher’s No. 3 doubles had a similar story, winning their first set 6-1 before dropping the second 7-5. The Cougars brought their A-game in the tiebreaker to win 10-7.
Toni Martinez, Christopher’s No. 4 singles, also won her match 6-1, 7-6.
Christopher (3-3) will play again at 4 p.m. Thursday at Salinas.
Mustangs best ‘Catz
Gilroy won its second match of the season, beating Watsonville 284-317 at Gavilan Golf Course.
Lizette Alcantar led the Mustangs with a 44, a score that also earned her medalist honors. Nicole Dan was close behind and tied her season best score of 46 to finish eight shots below her average. Alessandra Esposito notched a 55 for the Mustangs and Judith Diaz shot a 58. Gilroy had to card an automatic 81 for its missing fifth player, but still beat the team average by 37 strokes, coach Daniel Valdez said.
“We will celebrate our victory but our season is not over yet,” he said. “…we must continue to work hard and good things just might happen.”
Gilroy squares off with Christopher at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Gavilan Golf Course.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Gilroy falls to Harbor
Erika Cates struck for three goals in Tuesday’s game against Harbor, but it wasn’t enough to lift her team to win. Gilroy lost 14-7.
Cates added four steals and three assists. Lexi Pino was stellar on defense, racking up six steals against Harbor.
Harbor jumped out to a 6-3 lead at halftime and scored four goals in the final two quarters to win. Gilroy notched one in the first, two in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs will be back in the water at 5 p.m. Thursday when they host Everett Alvarez.
Cougars streak snapped by MVC
Christopher’s three-game win streak was dismantled as it fell 3-1 to Monte Vista Christian Tuesday in Watsonville.
The Cougars won the first set 25-22 by the score was flipped on the second as they lost 25-22. The Mustangs won the final two sets 25-19, 25-19.

Christopher (13-5 overall, 3-1 in league) hosts San Benito at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
