Scammers steal big from Gilroyans

Following the discovery of at least four credit card skimming devices in Gilroy at least $56,000 has been reported stolen in credit card and debit card transactions.

The Gilroy Police Department with the help of Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team discovered two credit card skimming devices planted at the Valero Gas Station on First Street. Police discovered an additional two devices a week later at the Chevron Gas Station on Westwood Drive.

At this time police do not know the exact date that the devices were installed, but they believe that the devices were in place for at least two weeks.

Thieves used the credit card skimmers, which could not be seen, to obtain credit and debit card numbers, used to go online, access bank accounts and withdraw money. According to police records, the thieves also used the stolen bank information to open up lines of credit.
