Youth Sports: Nanez captures third AOY title

GILROY—Kayla Nanez has won soccer championships, broken track records and has been named the Valley Christian School’s Female Athlete of the Year for three consecutive years—and she’s only in eighth grade.
The Christopher High volleyball program will host five general all skills camps this summer, with only 32 slots available per session. 

Gifted Games keeps on growing, 1,500 gather this year

The Ascension Solorsano Middle School girls soccer team, shown with coach Angel Trejo, took second place in the East Section April 16 after losing to Valley Christian, which has won the championship for four years straight. ASMS finished higher than more than 30 other teams.
Glory Baseball will hold spring workouts to fill roster spots for its 18U summer/fall travel team at 9 a.m. May 3 at Gilroy High School.
GILROY—Gilroy gymnast Marcela Mantilla hasn't competed since 2013, but she hasn't been taking it easy either.
Maggie Brinkman, a 12-year-old Brownell Middle School student, took fifth place at the 2015 Knight of Columbus Freethrow Contest state finals March 21 in Fresno.
The Gilroy Little League will host opening day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Christmas Hill Park.
