Carrie Blomquist

Carrie Blomquist received the Owens Citizenship Award 2008 from Oregon Institute of Technology. The Owens Citizenship Award was established by the family of the late Rose and Vern J. Owens. It's intended for the Oregon Tech student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has made outstanding contributions to the university. This is exemplified by high moral standards, participation in school activities, interest in the betterment of student body standards, a cooperative attitude toward the faculty and fellow students, and a spirit of adventure in academic activities.

Carrie is the daughter of Carol Blomquist of San Martin.

Rachel Hunter

Rachel Hunter, of Morgan Hill, was honored at Lipscomb University in Tennessee and placed on the Provost's List for the spring semester.

Rachel is a pre-nursing major and Spring Academy graduate.

Students head to Boys' State

Four Gilroy High School students departed recently to Boys' State in Sacramento. The week-long program is sponsored by the American Legion to create better citizens by making the boys aware of their responsibilities and obligations in the operation of good government. Junior students are chosen on the basis of scholarship, character, citizenship and leadership. It is an honor to be selected because only four boys from Gilroy High and 950 boys from throughout the entire state of California were invited.

Cory Michael McCarthy

Cory Michael McCarthy has received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California at Davis.

Cory, son of former Gilroy residents Mike and Carol McCarthy, graduated from Gilroy High in 1999 and attended Cabrillo Community College before entering the Army in 2001, where he served in Iraq as a combat medic with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. In 2006 Cory graduated with honors from De Anza College. He currently lives in Roseville with his wife Sabrina and her daughter Ashlyn.

WEDDING

Trantow-Pearson/Phillips

Stephanie Trantow-Pearson and Ryan Phillips married May 3, 2008 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.

Stephanie, daughter of Dr. Stephen Pearson and Patti Trantow, is a senior consultant with Deloitte & Touche LLP. She is a 1999 graduate of Live Oak High School and received a bachelor's and master's in industrial engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Ryan, son of Rich Phillips and Debbie Phillips, is an electrical engineer with American Consulting Engineers Electrical, Inc. He is a 1996 graduate of Live Oak High School and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

The couple met on a blind date in 1999. The bride was escorted by her father to a string quartet rendition of "At Last." The newlyweds performed their first dance to "Better Together" by Jack Johnson. The couple honeymooned in Belize and reside in Redwood City.

Brooklyn Joanne Mesa

Brooklyn Joanne Mesa was born Jan. 7, 2008 at Kaiser Santa Teresa to Angela and Jason Mesa of Gilroy. She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces.

John David Snapp

John David Snapp was born June 4, 2008 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Lorraine and David Snapp of Los Banos. He weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces.

Alexia Marie Carrillo

Alexia Marie Carrillo was born June 11, 2008 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Jennifer Marie Quistian and David Carrillo of Gilroy.

Niko Giovanni Blanco

Niko Giovanni Blanco was born June 22, 2008 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Darla Belen Espinoza and Javier Blanco of Hollister. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
