News briefs: New signal coming at 10th and Church streets

New signal coming at 10th and Church streets

A modified traffic signal may save lives. Two years after 5-year-old Brayan Trejo's death at the intersection of 10th and Church streets, a traffic signal with a protected left turn signal will be built. Trejo was killed with a green light to cross when Robertina Delgado Franco turned left into the crosswalk.

Family and friends of Trejo have said a protected left turn signal could have saved the boy's life. City officials have studied the signal and determined that a left turn signal would make crossing the street safer. Changes will also include a new curb, gutter and sidewalk on the northeast corner of Church Street.

The project cost $457,000 with $450,000 coming from the state. Construction will begin at the end of July and is expected to be completed in six months.

Flippers, fins, floats and films

The city of Gilroy Community Services Department is offering more programs this summer than ever before and caps off a sweltering week of triple digit temperatures with a screening of "Surf's Up" at the Gilroy High School pool, between 7:30 and 10 p.m. tonight.

The event is open to all ages and costs $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents.

Bring your favorite pool float, flippers or fins and enjoy a night of family fun. "The Water Horse" will be shown Aug. 1 in the GHS pool.

The city offers a variety of healthwise, educational classes for all ages and still has empty spots available. Junior lifeguard training and swim lessons kick in July 14, tennis camp on July 28 and art camp on Aug. 4.

"We're all about creating opportunities for families," said Veronica Torres, events coordinator.

The activities aim to get Gilroyans out of the house and into the community, she said.

Information can be found on the City of Gilroy's Web site at www.ci.gilroy.ca.us. Online registration is free and allows the public to view many additional offerings the city provides this summer.
