Two auto-related assaults Sunday night – one gang related
Jul 21, 2008
 By Chris Bone

Four suspected gang members cruised up to a group of four pedestrians walking along the 8100 block of Murray Avenue Sunday night and yelled gang slogans before briefly attacking them. Shortly afterward and nearby a separate car attempted to run over a 14-year-old girl, but it is unknown if the latter attack is gang related, police said.

The first incident occurred after one of the suspects in the car brandished a knife and threatened to murder one of the victims. Then the suspect behind the wheel attempted to run over another one of the four victims, who included a 15-, a 17- and a 23-year-old, all males, and a 14-year-old female. The vehicle struck one of the males on his left lower leg; he suffered minor injuries, police said.

After the encounter - during which the suspects also threw metal pipes, rocks, and sticks at the victims - the assailants fled in their vehicle toward Leavesley Avenue. Police have since located the abandoned car, which was identified as the suspect's vehicle.

Within two hours after that incident, a compact dark colored vehicle attempted to run over a 14-year-old female in the area of Rogers Lane and Hadley Court by jumping the curb and accelerating toward her, police said. The victim suffered minor injuries including a broken thumb. The suspect vehicle in this case has also been recovered.
