Caller 1: Great game on Saturday versus Los Gatos. GHS' offense and defense have done an outstanding job, but we have not heard much about their special teams. For the last few weeks the offense/defense/special teams have clicked to perfection. Can you provide me information about special teams? My son always comes home and talks about getting "skull" stickers.

Gilroy's special teams play has been fantastic lately, evident by the first kickoff return for a touchdown this season, and a blocked punt in the game against Los Gatos Saturday.

As for skulls, Gilroy's Head Coach Rich Hammond isn't a fan of logos on the helmet, so the football team has been sporting simple, blue hats all year. Early in the season, however, coaches decided they wanted to reward the kids for exceptional play, specifically special teams players.

Special teamers don't get a lot of glory, but they have by far the craziest, most dangerous job in the game. Running full speed down the field, these athletes collide with opponents who are charging towards them at a similar clip. Considering how hazardous it is, the skull stickers seem appropriate.

Gold stars are for kindergartners, skulls are for football players - or for rich kids who like to row boats for Ivy League schools.

How 'bout some pub?

There are about 150 kids from the Hollister, Gilroy and I think the Morgan Hill area who attend Monte Vista Christian High School in Watsonville. There are never any articles on their sports. So, if every once in a while you could throw some scores in, that would be great.
