VFW Vets take the lead
May 7, 2008
 By Bob Burch

The VFW Vets capped a competitive tie-breaker evening with a 7-6 edging of California Overhead in Men's D League play Monday at Las Animas Park.

Three games were played to break ties for first-half titles in the Gilroy Community Services Department adult softball program.

The Vets and Overhead each went 6-0 in the eight-team D circuit. California Overhead took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in a two-run double by Art Tomasetti. After the VFW Vets countered with home runs by Danny Melendez, Frankie Martinez and Jake Glass in the second to grab a 4-3 lead, Mario Gallardo's two-out home run ignited a three-run third for Overhead.

Daniel Montenegro hit a two-run homer in the Vets third for a 6-6 tie. The final run of the game came in the fifth when Junior Espinoza singled to open the Vets frame, reached third on a Jason Contreras single, then scored on a Montenegro sacrifice fly.

The Players and Feather Haven also played a one-run contest for the first-half DD title, the Players escaping with a 12-11 win.

The Players trailed 11-7 entering the bottom of the sixth, then pushed across five runs for a 12-11 lead. Roy Escudero slapped a three-run triple , Danny Granados an RBI-single for the Players in the rally. Joey Ojeda went 3-for-3, Robert Tankersley 3-for-4 for the winners. Phillip Alosi and Rob Rocha each went 3-for-4 for Feather Haven. Jessie Nunez scored three runs.

Bracco's Towing rallied past the Dirty Dozen 12-7 for the first-half CCC crown.

Xavier Puente doubled and singled, scoring twice as the Dirty Dozen built a 6-2 lead after three innings.

Humberto Quintero's two-run single for Bracco's cut the deficit to 7-5 in the fifth inning. Cesar Rojas hit a three-run home run and Robert Sanchez added a solo blast as Bracco's Towing struck for seven runs in the sixth inning.

Daniel Salinas went 3-for-3 for the Dirty Dozen.
