In a much anticipated game Thursday, the Rockies of Gilroy Little League's Boys Major Division gained sole possession of first place by defeating the Rangers 6-2.
The Rockies' offense was led by Ronnie Reed, the current home run leader in Boys Majors with five, who had a single and double. He was followed on the stat sheet by singles from Zachary Loo, Alexander Vega, Brendan Laden, and Victor Lugo. Pitcher Jalynd Gallardo recorded seven strikeouts on the game, keeping the Rangers off balance throughout the contest.
Gilroy's Rangers were paced by Trevor Large, who was a home run away from the cycle. He was backed up by singles from Isiaha Campos, Jonathan and Jared Frietas, Joe Vanni, and Ethan Wrenn. The Rangers' defense was led by Large, who got the start and had five strikeouts in two innings, and Joe Vanni, who recorded six strikeouts as the closer. The Frietas brothers also shared pitching duties, combining for 5 strikeouts.
With just under three weeks left in the season, the Rockies are now in first place with a 9-1-1 record. The Rangers still have time to recover from the loss as they hold a second-place position with an 8-3 record.
