Gilroy edges St. Francis 1-0
Oct 6, 2008
By Dispatch Sports Staff - GHS Field Hockey

MOUNTAIN VIEW - Jennifer Rose swept a wide-open shot into the cage Monday night to top St. Francis 1-0 and keep Gilroy High field hockey unbeaten at 15-0-1.

The Mustangs had excellent passing by Mandy Jo Torres, who earned the direct assist, Jenna Vivian and Dani Hemeon on the play.

"Mandy Jo was one on none, pushed the ball from right to left and found Jennifer Rose for an easy goal," Mustangs coach Adam Gemar said.

Gilroy has now beaten every team that was considered on the top of the Central Coast Section pecking order to start the year.

Still, Gemar refused to say Gilroy was the favorite entering the playoffs.

"They had a lot of pressure on us," he said. "They didn't have a lot of shots, but neither did we.

"It could have gone either way."

Dani Hemeon received Player of the Game honors, a growing trend since senior midfielder Laura Spellman went down with an injury last week. Coaches are unsure how long Spellman will be out.

"[Hemeon] was huge tonight, unbelievable stick handling," Gemar said. "She didn't get the assist on the goal, but it came off of her (pass) to Vivian."

With only five games remaining in the season, coaches are focusing on the home stretch. Several tough contestS remain, including a rematch with St. Francis on October 30.

In recent games, Gilroy has topped Santa Catalina 9-0, Carmel 8-0 and Robert Louis Stevenson 7-0.

The Mustangs will go on the road to play at North Salinas at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
