Most people think we’ve entered the “Christmas season,” unaware of the ancient Christian season of Advent, which encompasses the four weeks before Christmas itself.

Whatever it’s called, this is a time of multiple entertainment opportunities for people who wish to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

n The South Valley Community Christmas Concert will be held in the parish hall of Morgan Hill’s St. Catherine Roman Catholic Church (17400 Peak Ave.) today at 7pm. This free evening of inspiring holiday music had its beginning as an annual performance by choirs of The local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the years, it has become even more of a community event as it has been cosponsored by the local Catholic parish.

Among the groups participating are the Handbell Choir from Gilroy’s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Zion Teen Choir, students from the Suzuki String Academy, the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers and choirs from the sponsoring churches.

n A pageant re-creating Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus will be presented at the Santa Clara First Baptist Church (3111 Benton St. in Santa Clara). From today through Dec. 12, five 30-minute performances will be held beginning at 6:30pm.

This free event allows visitors to experience biblical Bethlehem, complete with mounted Roman soldiers, camels, donkeys and villagers in costume period costumes. There are also interactive exhibits for winemaking, bread-baking, basket-weaving and other activities of the time.

n “An Unexpected Gift” will be presented by the adult choir of Morgan Hill’s West Hills Community Church (16695 DeWitt Ave.).  Admission is free for this dramatic musical. Times are 7:30pm today and 4pm and 6:30pm on Dec. 11.

n The Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church (16970 DeWitt Ave.) presents “The Wonder of Christmas” at 7pm today and 4pm on Dec. 11. Adult and youth choirs will perform traditional and contemporary Christmas music. Ticket prices are $3 each or $12 per family.

n Morgan Hill’s Shadow Mountain Baptist Church presents “The Christmas Shoes,” a musical tale of sacrificial love. Free performances will take place Dec. 10 at 5pm and 7pm and Dec. 11 at 6pm. Refreshments will follow each show.

n “La Pastorela” (“The Shepherd’s Play”) is performed by Teatro Campesino, a Christmas tradition at Mission San Juan Bautista. Eleven performances will be presented between Dec. 9 and 18.  Although performed in Spanish, this play is very accessible to English-only speakers. Ticket prices range from $12 to $30. Call (831) 623-2444 for more information.

n San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral (1100 California St.) hosts many traditional Christmas concerts.  On Dec. 12 is the popular “A Brass and Organ Christmas,” featuring the cathedral’s magnificent organ accompanied by trumpets, tubas, french horns and trombones in an extraordinary concert of carols enhanced by the unique acoustics of the massive building. Ticket prices range from $15 to $50. Call (866) 468-3399 for more information.
