A fire at a home on Church Avenue near the intersection of Columbet Avenue in San Martin killed two family pets this afternoon but a third survived.

Gail Dominquez was home alone at approximately 3 p.m. at one end of the single-story structure when she heard a smoke detector alarm sounding from the other end of the home. She looked into a little-used room and saw flames and quickly dialed 911 and got out of the house.

She could not find one of her two dogs and a cat.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames but removed tiles from the roof over the room to make sure the blaze had not reached the attic area.

CalFire Battalion Chief Derek Witmer said crews would be mopping up this afternoon, and the cause of the blaze and amount of damage had not been determined by Web site posting time.
