Gilroy’s varsity girls soccer team kicked off the season with a successful start against Seaside Tuesday evening, winning 4-1 in Monterey.

The Mustangs’ Ariana Vera and Erin Slattery each scored a goal to give the team a 2-0 advantage at the half, before Kristi Figueroa tacked on two more to give Gilroy a comfortable advantage to hold on for the game.

“It was a good one,” GHS Coach Jose Hernandez said. “It’s our first game, so, it’s pretty much what I was expecting … We’re a very young team. We made a lot of mistakes but we’ll get it together.”

With seven freshman on the squad and three starting against Seaside, the Mustangs showed plenty of potential by only allowing three shots on goal while finding net on strikes of their own.

“(Vera) just took the corner and used her speed to drill the first goal of the game,” Hernandez said. “Kristi scored the last two. That was kind of remarkable there. She was gonna end that game and that was it … (Goalie Lauren Bertero) played well. Our defense did a good job of limiting shots.”

The team’s next contest will be played after the Thanksgiving break when the Mustangs hit the road to play Santa Teresa Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 3:30 p.m.
