Solo Crash Injures Driver, Ties Up U.S. 101 Traffic

Gilroy – A solo driver traveling southbound on U.S. 101 lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons about noon Friday, then overcompensated, causing the vehicle to flip. The man was transported to Saint Louise Regional Hospital, then transported by air ambulance to an area trauma center. At press time, his name and injuries were unknown. The crash tied up southbound traffic on U.S. 101 Friday afternoon long after the wreckage was cleared.

Help Make a Nite to Remember for Seniors

Gilroy – The June 15 annual graduation celebration – It’s a Grad Nite 2007 – held at the Gilroy High School gym is nearing and needs support from the local community. The event provides entertainment, prizes and food to about half the graduating class, and acts as an alternative to house parties thrown by students. Organizer Tom Chavez said he and colleagues are looking for an additional $3,500 in donations and 50 raffle prizes to put it on.

“The whole concept of a Grad Nite is to give the graduating class of seniors a safe and sober environment to have a good time, to celebrate their graduation with their fellow graduates,” said Chavez.

The students will have plenty to entertain them. In addition to snacks, a DJ and a raffle that doles out prizes throughout the long night, there will be a bevy of games and activities. There also will be a cash cube, in which students are put in a glass case and have 15 seconds to snag money – real and fake – as it is powered around them by a fan. The night will end with an interactive performance by a hypnotist.

The nonprofit that runs the event, which costs about $40,000 to put on, is asking for donations from parents and organizations in any amount or donated items for the student raffle. They could also use volunteers to prepare the gym Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

New Books for Science Class

Gilroy – The school district board of trustees unanimously approved the replacement of new science textbooks for elementary and middle school classes. Two committees comprised of 18 elementary teachers and nine middle school teachers chose ‘California Science,’ published by Harcourt School Publishers, for elementary science classes and McDougal Littell California Middle School Science, published by McDougal Littell, for middle-school science classes. The committees also sought student input. Trustees approved the textbook purchase – mandated by a 2004 state law requiring all students have equal access to learning materials – at the cost of $590,000 to the district from funds set aside for instructional materials.

The textbooks will be on display through June 22 at the district office.
