Gilroy – First-term City Council member Craig Gartman was appointed the new mayor pro tempore – Latin for “temporary” – on Monday.
The position rotates every eight months, with three mayor pro tempores per election cycle. Councilman Bob Dillon most recently served as mayor pro tempore.
The position is responsible for helping the mayor fulfill various political commitments, such as attending constituent dinners, ribbon cuttings, and other public events. The mayor pro tempore also presides over meetings when the mayor is absent or must recuse from a decision.
This is Gartman’s first time serving in the position.
GATE group gets non-profit status
Gilroy – A group of parents of accelerated students in the district’s Gifted and Talented Education program received official recognition as the OpenGATE Educational Foundation, Inc.
The group will hold an initial board meeting, elect additional board members, elect officers, open a checking account and begin fundraising to grow the school district’s GATE program.

Young volunteer scholarships
Gilroy – From now through March 15, adults can nominate young volunteers for a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship through the Kohl’s Kids Who Care program.
Each year the program rewards outstanding young people, ages 6 to 18, for their community service. This year, more than 1,000 volunteers across the country will be recognized, and more than 100 will receive scholarships for post-secondary education. Kohl’s also will award 10 national finalists each a $5,000 scholarship for post-secondary education and a $1,000 grant to a nonprofit benefactor of the finalists’ choice.
To nominate a volunteer, complete a nomination form obtained at any Kohl’s store or online at www.kohlscorporation.com. The deadline is March 15. The nominees are judged in two age groups, 6 to 12 and 13 to 18.
Two winners will be selected at each store – one from each age range – to receive a $50 gift card. Those winners will go on to compete for 138 regional scholarships worth $1,000 each. Regional winners will compete for one of the 10 national scholarships. National winners will be announced in July.

Pair scheduled for court Friday
San Martin – Anthony Aguilera, the 20-year-old Gilroy man arrested following a stabbing and manhunt at Murray Avenue and Chestnut Street in January, is scheduled to be in court with suspected accomplice Daniel Michael Zuniga, 20, on Friday.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office is continuing its investigation to file charges against the men in several cases. Friday will be the first time the defendants have appeared in court together, and representation will be
Since his arrest, Aguilera has been held without bail in county jail on an attempted murder charge from one of three unrelated Gilroy cases, which include two stabbings and a shooting.
He was arraigned on Feb. 2 on the attempted murder charge, two felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, willfully or maliciously discharging a firearm, and possession of alcohol by a minor in public.
Police arrested Zuniga in November on suspicion of attempted murder in the shooting of a 22-year-old Gilroy man who was in his car on Church Street last Oct. 23.
Aguilera also is a suspect in that incident, as well as in the stabbing of a pedestrian on Princevalle Street on Nov. 7, and a stabbing at Tenth and Rosanna streets in July.
Mt. Madonna open house slated
Watsonville – Mount Madonna School will hold an open house for the middle school and high school from 12 to 2pm Saturday.
An open house for the elementary school will take place from 12 to 2pm April 9. Mount Madonna School is located atop Mount Madonna at 491 Summit Road.

Fashion show slated for Saturday
Gilroy – The Gilroy Elks will hold their 42nd annual “Fashion Show” March 12. Tickets are $25 each at 2765 Hecker Pass Highway in Gilroy.

San Martin – The San Martin Horsemen Association’s will hold it’s March general meeting on March 11 at 7pm at the Morgan Hill Grange Hall, 40 E. 4th St.
