Dear Editor,

A few words about our local nursing home, Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. It started out as Driftwood Convalescent Hospital many years ago and has changed management more than a few times.

Seeing firsthand the care and attention that different managements skilled nursing facilities in the area can give, we are very fortunate to have Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation as a part of our town, to be there if we need them.

Sure, nobody wants to go to a nursing home, but sometimes it is necessary and the directors, nurses, and aides work with families to make it as comfortable a situation as possible. It is a very tough job both physically and emotionally for nursing home employees, but they do it well.

The “old” Driftwood days are just that. Occupational, physical, speech and respiratory therapy are available now along with the only program in our area for specialty rehabilitation for pulmonary patients.

They also have a memory disorder unit (Alzheimer’s and others) which is staffed by dedicated caring people. Hospice services are available and work side by side with the healthcare center.

I have seen the changes through the years and the question I always ask is “Would I send my family member here or even myself?” The answer is yes to both. I’m not in a hurry but when my time comes and I need to be in a skilled nursing home, I will be there.
