Chicks rally past Chops

Gilroy – Chicks N’ Sticks rallied past California Chop Shop 11-10 Tuesday to win the first-half Co-Rec B League softball title at Las Animas Park.

Benny Sanchez raced to third base on an error to lead off the seventh inning, then scored on a Grace Gonzalez single to cap the Chicks N’ Sticks comeback.

Both teams went 4-2 in the regular season, forcing the extra contest.

Melissa Taku went 3-for-4 and Liz Talavera lined a single and double as California Chop Shop built a 10-8 lead. Bobby Reggiani followed a two-out single by Jessica Loza with a two-run double in the Chicks N’ Sticks sixth to tie the score. Sanchez led the Sticks offense with a triple and double.

The Slammers won two games at Gavilan Sports Park Tuesday to earn the first-half Men’s D title.

A three-team tie at 5-1 existed, leading to Tuesday’s twinbill.

The Slammers opened play with a 13-8 nod over Community Bank.

The Bankers held a 7-2 lead through five innings. The Slammers responded with an 11-run outburst in the sixth, paced by a single and home run from Kenny Hopf. Paul Garcia, Benny Garcia and Dustin Barnes added two hits apiece in the rally. Paul Garcia went 4-for-4. Rich Furtado socked a homer and two singles for Community Bank.

Paul Garcia completed a 9-for-9 night with five hits in the nightcap, a 19-15 win over Ellite Barbers and Hair Stylists.

Hopf homered in a 5-for-5, five-run effort. Ralph Ortiz hit a home run, triple and single for the winners. Tracy Sustaita went 5-for-5 and Greg Lucio Jr. scored four runs for Ellite Barbers.

The second half of the 79-team Gilroy Community Services Department adult softball program opens Monday June 20 with tripleheaders at both Christmas Hill (Men’s CC) and Las Animas (Men’s CCC) Parks.
