NCAA Field Hockey: Ogle named Stanford’s Athlete of the Week

STANFORD, CA - August 29, 2014: The Stanford Cardinal vs the Delaware Blue Hens at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, CA. Final score Stanford Cardinal 4, Delaware Blue Hens 0.

STANFORD—The week of Oct. 3 was all about Elise Ogle.
The Gilroy High alum was named the Stanford Athlete of the Week, just a week after earning the NORPAC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
Ogle has been flying high for the Cardinal, recording a goal and an assist in its 3-0 shutout win at Yale on Sept. 28. She also assisted on the game-winning goal at UConn on Sept. 26 when she intercepted a pass from the defensive zone and connected with teammate Katie Keyser, who finished the play. The then-No. 9 ranked Stanford went on to upset the No. 2 Huskies 3-1 in what Ogle called one of her favorite games of the year.
Ogle’s efforts helped the Cardinal go 2-0 that weekend and the team has won its last eight straight games—including two wins over Northwestern (2-1) and Michigan (2-1 in OT) on Oct. 10 and 12, respectively.
But despite her stellar play, Ogle said the recognition still came as a shock.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” she said adding the honor was even more meaningful as fans vote for the winner. “I think my dad got a lot of people from Gilroy to vote. It’s nice because I think a lot of times when you go away to college, people forget about you.”
Ogle is in her fifth year at Stanford, playing as a redshirt senior while pursuing her Master’s Degree in Communications. The university has a program that allows students to earn their degree in one year as a opposed to two.
But with all that’s going on in her life, Ogle said her favorite memories from this year have been the ones she’s made with her Cardinal teammates.
“The best part has just been bonding with the team,” she said.
Ogle has scored seven goals and racked up 18 assists since joining Stanford in 2010 — she redshirted in 2011.
The Cardinal have just two home games remaining this season—a 2 p.m. game against Cal (Stanford will be the away time) on Oct. 24 and the regular season finale against UC Davis at 3 p.m. Oct. 31.
