Over the years, Christopher High softball seniors Aly Olvera and Mariah Martinez have played a lot of catch together. Without including Little League and travel ball, the duo has logged countless hours of pitch and catch as the starting battery for the Cougars.

Ever since missing a spot on the podium at last year’s Central Coast Section Track and Field Championships, Gilroy High senior Sarina Sandoval – the program’s record holder in the shot put – has had the number 40 flashing through her head.

First-year Gilroy High football head coach Brian Boyd saw last Monday’s opening of spring practices as the ideal time to raise the stakes for the roughly 40 athletes who gathered around him.

If the Tri-County Athletic League gave out an annual Most-Enthusiastic award, a likely frontrunner for that distinction this year could have been Gilroy High volleyball player Connor Escobar.

Two foursome spots are still available for Christopher High School’s third annual Cougar 10-hole Classic at Gilroy Golf Course on May 25. Cost per person is $75, and there are also a few solo spots still open. Money goes toward costs to cover referees and umpires. Gilroy High scored nine runs in its Central Coast Section Division II first round game Wednesday. With the way freshman Lauren Castro pitched in the Mustangs' quarterfinals matchup with Los Altos on Saturday night, one would've been plenty.

Eighth-seeded Leland High scored seven unanswered runs to stun No. 9 Christopher High 7-3 in a Central Coast Section Division II first round baseball matchup Thursday in San Jose.

Gilroy High track and field coach Cathy Silva said senior sprinter Jourdan Soares hasn't peaked yet this season. That thought is indeed promising for Soares, one of the Mustangs most successful track athletes in recent years. It is also scary for anyone lined up to his right or left.

The expression on pitcher Aly Olvera's face said it all. A quick glance back and up at the scoreboard above the center field fence validated the truth that her prep career was nearing the end much sooner than she and the rest of the Christopher High softball team had envisioned when waking up that morning.
